One of the rhino horn’s more useful purposes was for ornamental drinking cups to detect poisons. It is thought that this may have been because many early poisons were strong alkaloids that may have reacted strongly with the keratin and gelatin in the rhino horn, thereby indicating the presence of poison.

MING c.1620 -1640.
Blanc de Chine Porcelain.A Late Ming Blanc de Chine Porcelain Figure of Guanyin Holding a Scroll Standing on a Base with Waves Rushing Over it.
The porcelain known in the West as Blanc de Chine was produced 300 miles south of the main Chinese kiln complex of Jingdezhen. The term refers to the fine grain white porcelain made at the kilns situated near Dehua in the coastal province of Fujian, these kilns also produced other types of porcelain. A rather freely painted blue and white ware, porcelain with brightly coloured 'Swatow' type enamels as well as pieces with a brown iron-rich glaze. However it is the white blanc de Chine wares that have made these kilns famous. The quality and colour achieved by the Dehua potters was partly due to the local porcelain stone, it was unusually pure and was used without kaolin being added. This, combined with a low iron content and other chemical factors within the body as well as the glaze, enabled the potters to produce superb ivory-white porcelain.

Decorated with Porcelain Appliqué ; One Side Shows a Dragon Appearing From the Clouds While Another is Coming From the Ground, a Prunus Sprig is to the Left. The Other Side Shows a Trotting Deer Below a Crane and Prunus Branches.
Blanc de Chine cups of this type have been traditionally referred to as 'Libation Cups'. This is unlikely to be correct but their shape follows that of rhinoceros horn cups which was made locally, it is interesting baring in mind the important powers that the Chinese attach to this material. By having a Blanc de Chine cup of this form some of the powers of real rhinoceros horn might be conveyed to the drinker. The appliqués were many and varied, there arrangement alters from cup to cup giving an infinite variety.

This type of Blanc de Chine Porcelain is difficult to date, it has been suggested that there was no production of Blanc de Chine between about 1720 to 1820, that would push the dating of the present example into the 19th Century. Donnelly dates a similar Blanc de Chine vase to 1764, see below. However, this is only a cycical date and so it doesn't really help.

Ivory color Chinese porcelain first produced in Dehua Kiln in Fujian Province in the Ming Dynasty
The first Dehua Kiln, whose white porcelain became a representative genre of the Chinese porcelain industry, was a famous kiln that specialized in white porcelain making. Its sites spread about within the scope of today's Dehua County, in East China's Fujian Province.
Dehua County in central Fujian Province is known as one of the Three Porcelain Capitals in China, together with Jingdezhen in East China's Jiangxi Province and Liling in Central China's Hunan Province.
Dehua porcelain dates back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Solid and smooth, Dehua porcelain is resistant to both heat and cold. One type of "Jianbai" porcelain in particular has a sparkle and luster even more stunning than white jade, and its ivory-white color and superb workmanship make it a favorite of art lovers.
The body of its white porcelain was low in iron but high in potassium, while the color of the glazed surface was of a bright, smooth luster, as milky as frozen fat. It was thus often called "lard white" or "ivory white." Dehua white porcelain used to be one of the major export varieties in various dynasties. In the West it was called the "Chinese white porcelain" or "Marco Polo porcelain."
The most common objects of Dehua porcelain were a burner, cup, bottle, plate, tin, Zun (a kind of wine vessel), and Ding (an ancient cooking vessel), which were often decorated with appliqués (kinds of ornament) and stamps; the porcelain figurine was also remarkably exquisite. In fact, the masterpiece of Dehua porcelain was the white porcelain figure of Buddha.
Among Dehua porcelains, white Buddha figures, the most famous, represented the highest firing technique of Dehua kilns at that time. With a refined design and an elegant touch, the white porcelain of Dehua kilns became a representative genre of Chinese porcelain industry in that period and was reputed as the Bright Pearl of Porcelain in the World.
Although by the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368), Dehua porcelains were already being exported to other countries and regions, it was during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) that Dehua porcelain gradually developed its own techniques and styles and enjoyed great development

Tsao Fu, in ancient Chinese Mythology, was an exceptionally skilled charioteer, who is said to have lived around 950 B.C. The Chinese tell the story of the Emperor Mu Wang, who was determined to visit paradise. He wanted to taste the peaches of immortality there. He found a very brave charioteer named Tsao Fu, who drove eight amazing horses with great skill. Tsao Fu was afraid of nothing—he carried the emperor across the Earth and into the heavens. The emperor finally reached Mount K’uen Lun and tasted the peaches of immortality. His brave charioteer Tsao Fu was carried up to the stars, where both he and his eight horses can be seen among the stars of the constellation Cepheus. The star Zeta Cephei is specifically named after him. R and G McPherson dealers in

Johan Carl Kempe (8 December 1884 – 8 July 1967) was one of the greatest collectors of Early Chinese Ceramics, like many he started off with Ming and Qing polychrome Porcelain before becoming interested in the more restrained palette of Early Chinese Stoneware and Porcelain. Carl Kempe was ideally placed as a collector of early Chinese ceramics, Sweden was at the forefront of research and collecting during most of the 20th century, Swedish academics and archaeologists had direct links with China, helping out with the excavation of Neolithic sites as well as kilns from the Song dynasty.
King Gustav VI of Sweden (1883-1973) headed a very active circle of native scholarly collectors including Kempe. From 1929 academics contributed information to collectors and others interested in Chinese ceramics through the publication of 'Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities'. Jan Wirgin author of 'Sung Ceramic Designs' and Bo Gyllensvard, who in 1964 wrote 'Catalogue of Chinese Ceramics In the Carl Kempe Collection' were just two of the many people contributing to the knowledge of Chinese ceramics at the time.

Blanc de Chine PorcelainA 17th Century Blanc de Chine Porcelain Jue, Shunzhi or Kangxi c.1650 to 1700.Described as Fen Ting and Dated to the Ming Dynasty in the Carl Kempe Catalogue of 1964.
Jue were originally made of bronze, the form was used to serve or warm wine. It was used for ceremonial purposes by the Chinese of the Xia (c.2205-1766 BC) Shang Dynasty (1600– 1046 BC) and Zhou dynasties (1122 - 256 BC), it was then made of differing materials but I think always retaining its ceremonial significance. It has two protuberances on the top of the vessel, which were used when lifting the vessel out of heat. These are much smaller on the present example as it is only a representation of a bronze Jue, although it was made as functional object.

Blanc de Chine Porcelain.A Pair of Shunzhi or Kangxi Blanc de Chine Porcelain 'Dogs of Fu' (click on the image for more information) Taper-Stick Holder and Companion.c.1640-1700.
Blanc de Chine Fu Dogs are difficult to date, they were made in the provincial kilns of Dehua in Fujian province. There are very many versions, all of which are rather similar but really following the same basic model. Technically the production didn't change much either, on the whole the earlier models have more hand-working. However, the present example has more hand working than the early Blanc de Chine Fu dog from the Hatcher Cargo, datable to circa 1643 ( stock number 19961 ). The potting, glaze colour and general finish all point to a specific period but accurate dating is, I believe, very difficult.
As with most pairs of Blanc de Chine Fu Dogs the pair are not a pair in the way we know it today. For a start, both are male as they have a brocaded ball each. Only one has a nozzle to take a taper-stick. These would, I am sure, have been a pair originally, the colour, construction and especially the faces are very similar, although only one has his tongue sticking out.

The term Magot was used from as early as the mid 17th century to describe the European heavy set or bizarre representations in clay, plaster, copper or porcelain of Chinese or Indian figures. The term is usually used to describe the European porcelain. Pagoda Figure comes from the term pagode or religious figures housed in pagoda shrines. KANGXI 1662 - 1722A Kangxi Blanc de Chine Porcelain Seated Figure of Guanyin with a Child on a Rockwork Base.
Figures of Guanyin are by far the most common of all Blanc de Chine figures and indeed one of the most common images in Chinese figurative art. Guanyin was the Goddess of mercy and it is interesting to see how she is shown in a Madonna like pose here, with a child in her arms. She was especially revered in the area where this figure was produced; Dehua. Figures like the present example were often made for family shrines. The boy holding a lotus flower conveys the wish for children ( male children ).
This type of Blanc de Chine model can be seen in many English and European country houses and is similar to examples in the Dresden Palace.

Blanc de Chine PorcelainA Rare Blanc de Chine Porcelain Taper-Stick Holder in the Form of a Crane, Mid to Late 17th Century.

Blanc de Chine porcelain from Dehua became one of the best known and collected ceramics in Europe; however, it origins were of very humble means during the late Northern Song Dynasty. Due to the popularity of qingbai on the commercial market, the Dehua kilns started producing wares on a large scale during the Southern Song dynasty. The wares were often white with a bluish tinge, likely in imitation of qingbai, but with a coarser body of chalky white clay; generally, this was pressed into moulds to form objects such as cosmetic boxes and figurines. The Dehua kilns primarily made white wares for export and vast quantities were shipped from the port of Guangzhou. In time, the wares became more refined and the bluish tinge was abandoned for a thick glassy glaze of light-ivory. Production of Dehua wares continued far into the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) with the Dutch East India Company exporting vast quantities to Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries where it became known as the famous blanc de chine ware. Blanc de Chine Porcelain.A Moulded 17th Century Blanc de Chine Porcelain Wine Cup in the Form of a Veined Lotus Leaf Stem from the Outside with a Flowering Peony Overlaid on Each Side. The Recessed Base has Five Spur Type Feet on which the Cup sits.
R and G McPherson dealers in

BLANC DE CHINE
P.J. Donnelly, Faber and Faber 1969.
The first book about Blanc de Chine. A ground braking book in it's time with a lot of important information, however we can now see there are a lot of mistakes. Some pieces illustrated as being period Blanc de Chine are, in fact, late 19th/ 20th Century or not even Blanc de Chine at all but later Japanese porcelain. Many black and white illustrations. Hard back, sadly very expensive £200 or more. This is a difficult book if you are not famillar with the subject.

c.1643.LATE MING / TRANSITIONAL. c.1643. Blanc de Chine Porcelain Surprise or Puzzle Cup from the Hatcher Cargo. Blanc de Chine Cups are Known with a Number of Different Figures in Side. There were only a few such Puzzle Cups Recovered from the Hatcher Shipwreck. Indeed there were relatively few pieces of Blanc de Chine found on the wreck. Part of a Private English Collection of Blanc de Chine being offered for sale. Rhino horn has a beautiful translucent colour when carved, and from as far back as the Tang Dynasty the Chinese have made ornamental cups and other carvings. One of the rhino horn’s more useful purposes was for ornamental drinking cups to detect poisons. It is thought that this may have been because many early poisons were strong alkaloids that may have reacted strongly with the keratin and gelatin in the rhino horn, thereby indicating the presence of poison. A Shunzhi or Kangxi Blanc de Chine 'Dog of Fu' (click on the image for more information) Taper-Stick Holder .c.1640-1700.
R and G McPherson dealers in

KANGXI 1662 -1722.
Blanc de Chine. A Pair of Blanc de Chine Porcelain Guanyins, Kangxi Period.
Figures of Guanyin are by far the most common of all Blanc de Chine figures and indeed one of the most common images in Chinese figurative art. Guanyin was the Goddess of mercy, She was especially revered in the area where this figure was produced ; Dehua in Fujian Province. But her origins stem from Tibetan Buddhism, she was originally the patron saint of Tibetan Buddhism 'Avalokitesvara'.
It is quite possible that these blanc de chine figures did not start life together, there are many differences between the two figures, for example one has a tiara type crown while the other does not and one has more folds to the back of her robe. Blanc de chine figures like the present example were constructed of separate pieces put together. The idea of identical pairs is a relatively modern one, it is something we have become used to through the process of standardization through modern mass production techniques. Differences in pairs or sets are common among 17th and 18th century Chinese. The faces and front of the figures seem to be produced from the same mould, they just have different applied decoration.
